Wines with passion.
Mike and Zana Whittaker-Scott fell in love with the little vineyard and land on Rapaura Road during previous visits to Zana's family home in Marlborough. The property came up for sale and they decided to jump ship from north island life and make the move permanently south in 2021.
Knowing little about vines and the growing process but with a passion for wine a desire to work the land and an enthusiasm to learn, they stepped into the challenge, eager to make something of their own.
The remainder of 2021 was about learning and absorbing throughout the year and developing their organic management systems with invaluable help from some local organic wine growers.
The 2022 vintage produced a heavy crop of fruit with an excellent juice yield that has made two stunning organic Rosés, a full-bodied Rosé and a pale blushed but energetic sparkling Rosé with the winemaking expertly and undertaken by Aaron Zuccaro and his partner Bec Norton who have a passion for organic winemaking.
2023 produced a lower yield of fruit than 2022 but it did mean the fruit was able to ripen further. The perfect acid and bold skin colour were suitable to produce an excellent medium bodied table syrah, crafted by separating the fruit and fermentation into three different winemaking styles that were then later blended to create a balanced and characterful wine.
2024 was a real highlight year for us like it was for many, an El Nino weather pattern bought high UV and extended hours of 30C+ hot sun with cool still nights. The crop yield was low but the brix was excellent and the skins were dark with rich colour. While the wine is in barrels and yet to be bottled it is shaping up to be an excellent wine that we are very excited about.
The vineyard and iconic cellar door building were sold in late 2024 but the new owners will continue to produce organic fruit. We wish them all the best and look forward to seeing what the block produces in 2025.
“The 2024 vintage Syrah is shaping up exceptionally well, we are very excited to see it develop. ”
